Indianapolis Artsgarden, Glass dome structure in downtown Indianapolis, United States
The Indianapolis Artsgarden is a glass and steel dome in downtown Indianapolis, suspended above a busy street intersection and connected to several surrounding buildings. Elevated walkways link it directly to nearby hotels, offices, and a shopping mall, making it part of an indoor pedestrian network.
The structure opened in 1995, funded by the Lilly Endowment, a private foundation based in Indianapolis. It was built as part of a broader effort to revitalize downtown and connect the new Circle Centre Mall to the surrounding business district.
Inside, free concerts, performances, and exhibitions take place regularly, organized by local artists and arts nonprofits from Indianapolis. These events turn what could be just a covered walkway into a place where people stop, gather, and engage with the local arts scene.
The dome sits above street level and can be reached from the street or through the walkways connecting to nearby buildings. It works well as a covered shortcut through downtown, whatever the weather, and the interior is open to anyone passing through.
The entire glass roof is held up by just two pairs of diagonal steel beams crossing above the intersection, with no support columns inside the space at all. This is why the interior feels so open, and it made the engineering of the structure unusually complex for its size.
