Indiana Repertory Theatre, Repertory theatre in downtown Indianapolis, United States.
The Indiana Repertory Theatre is a professional repertory theatre in downtown Indianapolis, housed in a Spanish Baroque building with white terra cotta facades and ornate details. Inside, several distinct performance spaces of different sizes allow the company to run multiple productions throughout the season.
The building opened in 1927 as a movie palace, one of the grandest of its kind in the city at the time. In 1979 it was converted into a theatre, keeping the original architecture intact while adapting the interior for live performance.
The Indiana Repertory Theatre stages both classic plays and new works, often featuring artists from Indiana alongside performers from around the country. The mix gives the season a local feel while drawing on a wider range of voices and styles.
The theatre sits in downtown Indianapolis and can be reached on foot from many nearby hotels and transit stops. The building has several levels and entrances, so arriving a little early makes it easier to find your seat and take in the space.
At the top of the building there is a ballroom designed to look like an open Spanish town square, with an arched dome overhead painted to resemble the sky. This space was originally meant for social events tied to the old movie palace and is still used today for private gatherings.
