Jazz Standard, Jazz club and restaurant in Rose Hill, Manhattan, United States.
Jazz Standard was a basement jazz club and restaurant in Manhattan that accommodated around 150 guests for live performances. The venue offered barbecue dining alongside regular music programming from resident and touring ensembles.
The club opened in October 1997 and became a recording destination for live albums over its first two decades of operation. The venue closed permanently at the end of 2020 due to pandemic pressures on the jazz club industry.
The venue hosted the Mingus Big Band, Mingus Orchestra, and Mingus Dynasty as resident ensembles, with their performances recorded for albums and broadcast. Audiences gathered regularly for concerts by the Maria Schneider Orchestra, especially during Thanksgiving week, making it a central meeting place for serious jazz listeners.
The club was located near the 28th Street subway station, making it accessible by public transportation. The basement setting meant visitors could enjoy dinner and live music simultaneously in an intimate setting.
Every Monday night featured rotating performances by different versions of the Mingus Big Band, Mingus Orchestra, and Mingus Dynasty as resident groups. This rotating schedule allowed listeners to experience different interpretations of Charles Mingus compositions throughout the week.
