122 East 23rd Street, Residential tower in Gramercy, Manhattan, US

This residential complex in Manhattan comprises two connected towers surrounding a central courtyard and rises 18 stories. Inside are 133 condominiums, four retail shops, an automated underground parking system, a swimming pool, and a fitness facility for residents.

Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas designed and completed this building in 2018, marking his first ground-up residential project in New York City. The completion came years after he published influential writings about the city's development and urban design.

The building shows how modern residential architecture in New York borrows from abstract geometric forms, and this style shapes how residents experience the urban environment around them.

The complex is easily accessible by public transit and sits in an active neighborhood filled with restaurants and shops. Visitors should know that while parts of the courtyard are open to the public, many areas remain reserved for residents only.

The north tower features a chiseled corner edge that reveals layered glass surfaces, creating shifting geometric patterns as light moves across the facade. This experimental corner design became one of the architect's most distinctive residential approaches in the city.
