The five-story red brick mansion features 37 rooms across 18,000 square feet, including a ballroom, two kitchens, and a wine cellar.
Built in 1845 by William Samuel Johnson, the house underwent major renovations in 1887 by architect Stanford White who added a marble staircase and top-floor ballroom.
The residence hosted numerous social gatherings connecting traditional New York society members with entertainment industry figures throughout the 20th century.
The building stands at the corner of Irving Place, near multiple subway stations, restaurants, and the private Gramercy Park accessible only to local residents.
Benjamin Sonnenberg purchased the entire building in 1945 for $85,000 and filled it with English furniture, Old Masters drawings, and sculptures.
