Little Loomhouse, Historic weaving center in Kenwood Hill, Louisville, United States
The Little Loomhouse is a cluster of three wooden cabins built over several decades starting in 1870, each serving as both living quarters and working spaces. The buildings contain original looms and a collection of woven patterns that show how weaving was practiced here over many years.
Lou Tate started her weaving business at Esta Cabin in 1939 and ran it there until her death in 1979. Her work helped keep weaving traditions alive and turned the site into a record of regional craftsmanship techniques.
The looms inside were operated by craftspeople who passed their skills from one generation to the next within these walls. Weaving was a way of life here, shaping how the neighborhood saw itself and leaving traces of that tradition in every room.
The site can only be visited on guided tours offered several days each week. Check hours beforehand and dress comfortably, as some areas inside can be tight and warm with the looms in use.
Eleanor Roosevelt visited in the 1940s and accidentally left a dent in a floorboard - a physical trace that survived as an unplanned record of her visit. Staff kept this small damage as a reminder of that moment.
