Market Square Arena, Sports arena in downtown Indianapolis, United States.
Market Square Arena was a multipurpose venue in downtown Indianapolis with a distinctive geodesic dome design. The building held roughly 16,500 spectators and served both basketball games and large-scale concerts.
The building opened in 1974 following a proposal by Mayor Richard Lugar and became part of Indianapolis's effort to establish itself as a sports city. The venue remained active for nearly three decades before demolition in 2001.
From 1974 to 1999, this venue hosted both Indiana Pacers basketball games and major musical performances, including Elvis Presley's final concert.
The venue sat on East Market Street in the heart of downtown and connected easily to other city attractions. Visitors could choose from different seating zones depending on the event type.
The arena hosted a memorable moment in hockey history when a famous player scored his first professional goal there. Years later, it also witnessed a basketball legend's return to the court.
