Beck-Warren House, Greek Revival residence in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Description
The Beck-Warren House is a Greek Revival residence in Cambridge located on Harvard's campus. It features a front-facing gable roof with single-story side-gabled wings and smooth Doric columns supporting the front porch.
History
The house was built in 1833 for Professor Charles Beck. It later passed to Sanskrit scholar Henry Clarke Warren, who donated it to Harvard University in 1899.
Culture
The interior blends Greek Revival and Colonial styles, showing how American homes evolved during the 1800s. You can see how different architectural traditions came together in one house.
Practical
The building sits on the west side of Prescott Street within Harvard's campus and currently serves as office space. Since it functions as an active workplace, visiting may be limited to external viewing.
Did you know?
The house underwent specific modifications during Warren's ownership to accommodate his physical disabilities. These changes were made while keeping the building's original character intact.
