Buttonball Tree, Remarkable tree in Sunderland, Massachusetts.
The Buttonball Tree is an American sycamore in Sunderland, Massachusetts, known for its impressive size. The tree rises to approximately 113 feet tall and has a trunk circumference of about 25 feet, making it a striking natural landmark.
The tree existed before the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787, making it a living witness to more than two centuries of American history. Its roots were established during the colonial period when European settlement was still new to the region.
In colonial times, sycamore trees were planted near new houses as bride and groom trees to represent lasting marriages. This practice showed how people connected nature with important life events.
The tree stands on North Main Street in Sunderland with parking available south of Warner Drive for easy access. Walking around the area lets you take time to appreciate its full size and surroundings.
The Buttonball Tree holds the distinction of being the largest sycamore on the East Coast, with a trunk diameter larger than any other tree east of the Mississippi River. Its exceptional width and height make it a botanical record holder in the region.
