Mount Toby, Mountain summit in Sunderland, Massachusetts, United States.
Mount Toby is a mountain in Sunderland, Massachusetts, with a summit elevation of about 1,269 feet above the Connecticut River Valley and composed of sedimentary rock. The forested slopes feature several streams, including Gunn Brook with its waterfalls.
The mountain was named after Captain Elnathan Toby, who made the first documented ascent. A hotel was built on the summit years later but burned down shortly after opening.
The mountain serves as an educational resource through the Mount Toby Demonstration Forest, managed by UMass-Amherst for research and learning purposes.
A hiking trail leads to the summit and a fire tower with wide-ranging views of the region. The climb is moderate and takes about three hours for the round trip on a route of roughly six miles.
The mountain supports over forty native fern species, including rare orchids such as the Showy Lady Slipper and Ram's Head Lady Slipper. This botanical diversity makes it a noteworthy destination for plant enthusiasts.
