El Cañuelo

El Cañuelo is a Spanish colonial fort on a small island at the entrance of San Juan Bay, featuring thick stone walls and military fortifications from the 17th century. The structure shows the strategic design used to protect the harbor from naval threats.

The fort was constructed between 1630 and 1660 to support harbor and bay defense against naval attacks and piracy. It formed part of a larger fortification system that secured Spain's control over the important port city.

The fortress represents Spanish military engineering in the Caribbean, forming part of the extensive defense network that protected Spanish colonial territories.

You can reach the fort by car through an artificial peninsula from Isla de Cabras, where you can see the outer walls. Wear comfortable shoes, as the access route crosses uneven ground.

The fort was positioned to force enemy ships into shallow water, where they would run aground and become targets for its cannons. This tactic made it an unexpected yet effective part of the harbor defense system.
