Gem Theatre, Historic theatre in downtown Detroit, United States.
Gem Theatre is a theatre and event building in downtown Detroit, designed in a Spanish Revival and Arts & Crafts style. It contains a main auditorium, a smaller event room, dining areas, and an outdoor garden.
The building was designed in 1927 by architect George D. Mason and opened as a movie house called Little Theatre. It changed names and functions several times before landing at its current address on Madison Avenue in 1997.
The Gem Theatre takes its current name from the "Century of Progress" world's fair, as it was once renamed to mark that era. Today visitors come for concerts, comedy shows, and private events, moving between the main hall, a smaller room, and the attached restaurant.
The main entrances are at street level and easy to find from Madison Avenue, and the garden is accessible depending on the event. It is worth checking in advance which part of the building will be in use, since different events take place in different rooms.
In 1997 the entire building was physically moved about 560 meters along its foundations to make way for a new construction nearby. It is one of the heaviest structures ever relocated this way in the United States.
