Comerica Park, Baseball stadium in Downtown Detroit, US
Comerica Park is a baseball stadium in Downtown Detroit in the state of Michigan, serving as home to the Detroit Tigers and seating around 40,000 spectators. The grandstands extend over three levels and offer views of the downtown high-rises, while the outer area of the stadium is equipped with fountains and open spaces.
Construction began in 1997 and the stadium opened on April 11, 2000, as the new home of the Tigers after 88 years at the old Tiger Stadium. Funding came largely from Comerica Bank, which also acquired the naming rights.
The main gate on Woodward Avenue is called Tiger Plaza and is guarded by two large steel tiger sculptures that have become a trademark of the place. On game days, fans gather under the statues and in front of the stands, where vendors with memorabilia and food wait for visitors.
From Grand Circus Park station, the entrance can be reached on foot in a few minutes, and there are several parking options around the stadium for drivers. Inside, concession stands are located on all levels, and a children's area with a small ferris wheel is located beyond the left outfield.
The playing field has a continuous dirt strip between home plate and the pitcher's mound, which is now only seen here in Major League Baseball. This layout recalls the early days of the sport, when such strips were common in many older stadiums.
