The Inn at 97 Winder is a mansion with a mansard roof and red brick walls completed in 1887, spanning over 11,000 square feet of space. The building features eight marble fireplaces, tall windows across three floors, and decorative woodwork details throughout the interior.
Pharmacist John Harvey built the mansion in 1887 in the Second Empire style and lived there until his death in 1905. During the Great Depression, the property became a rooming house, and later developers restored it and reopened it as a hotel in 2005.
The house carries the name of John Harvey, a Scottish-born pharmacist and philanthropist whose family lived there. The neighborhood, called Brush Park, reflects the time when wealthy Detroit residents built grand homes to showcase their success and refinement.
The hotel is centrally located in Detroit near Comerica Park and Little Caesars Arena, making it a good base for exploring the city. It is practical to book ahead since the property has only ten rooms and fills up quickly.
