Gen. Frederick Von Steuben Headquarters

The building is a two-and-a-half-story stone structure with a gabled roof and three chimneys, constructed in 1770 and located in the western portion of Valley Forge National Historical Park. Its interior has been carefully restored to reflect how it appeared when it served as a military command center.

Built by James White in 1770, the house became a command center starting in 1777 when the Revolutionary Army occupied the encampment. Von Steuben used the headquarters to develop training standards that significantly strengthened the military effectiveness of the troops.

The headquarters represents a turning point where military training methods were standardized and organized in ways that influenced American armed forces for generations. Visitors can see the spaces where officers worked to transform soldiers into a disciplined fighting force.

The headquarters is located along Pennsylvania Route 23 near the Valley Forge Post Office and can be easily reached by vehicle through the park roads. The site is part of a larger complex where visitors can explore multiple buildings and monuments.

The structure features a distinctive pent roof that separates the first and second floors, a practical design element from the colonial period. This architectural detail was common in buildings of that era, serving both structural and water-shedding purposes.
