Grafton Lakes State Park, State park in Rensselaer County, New York, US.
Grafton Lakes State Park is a state park in Rensselaer County, New York, built around a series of connected ponds, including Long Pond, Second Pond, and Third Pond, all set within forested land. Trails run through the woods and along the water, linking the different ponds and opening up to open fields in some sections.
The land was set aside as a state park in the 1970s, when New York moved to protect lakes and forested areas from development. Before that, the land was largely used for logging and some small-scale farming in earlier decades.
Nature programs run throughout the warmer months, giving visitors a chance to learn about the birds, insects, and plants that live around the ponds. The trails near the water are popular with local families who come on weekends to walk, fish, and watch wildlife along the shore.
In summer, designated spots for swimming and boating are open, and in winter the same trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Arriving early on weekends is a good idea, as the parking areas near Long Pond tend to fill up quickly on warm days.
The park contains five ponds, but most visitors only ever see Long Pond near the main entrance, leaving the others much less visited. The smaller ponds farther along the trails offer a very different feel, with quieter water and fewer people around.
