Granada Theater, Music venue and theater in Lawrence, United States
The Granada Theater is a live music and events venue housed in a red brick building on Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence, Kansas. The main floor is general admission standing, with a stage at one end and a bar running along the back and sides of the room.
The building was designed in 1928 by the Boller Brothers, a duo known for designing movie palaces and variety theaters across the Midwest. After decades of shifting uses, a renovation in the early 1990s converted it into a dedicated concert venue.
The Granada sits on Massachusetts Street, the main commercial strip of Lawrence, drawing students, locals, and visitors on show nights. The crowd outside before doors open is part of the evening, with people gathering on the sidewalk as a kind of informal warm-up to the concert.
The theater is easy to find on Massachusetts Street and within walking distance of other bars and restaurants in downtown Lawrence. On busy show nights, the street fills up, so arriving a little early makes the experience more comfortable.
The Get Up Kids recorded their live album here in 2005, which means the room's actual sound is preserved on a widely released record. Listening to the album before a visit gives a good sense of what a packed show in that space feels like.
