Glenn Cunningham Lake, body of water
Glenn Cunningham Lake is a reservoir in Nebraska near Omaha with a water surface of about 390 acres and a maximum depth of 23 feet (7 meters). The lake sits within a park of over 1,050 acres featuring trees, grassy areas, and trails where visitors can fish, boat, kayak, hike, bike, watch birds, play disc golf, or simply relax.
The lake was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and opened to the public in 1977. It was created for both flood management and public recreation, providing visitors with a place to enjoy outdoor activities.
The lake takes its name from Glenn Cunningham, a celebrated runner from Nebraska known for his athletic achievements and outdoor passion. Visitors come to experience nature together, observe birds, and participate in community events that gather people for outdoor activities.
The lake is easy to reach along 96th Street with entrances at State Highway 36, State Street, and Rainwood Road. The campground offers 42 sites with full hookups, 40 with electric power, and 7 tent spots, plus restrooms with showers and a snack bar.
The lake hosts Omaha's biggest Christmas light show, which runs from late November through New Year's Eve and transforms the area into a festive winter landscape. This special seasonal event draws many families who come to experience the bright displays and holiday atmosphere together.
