Governor Nelson State Park

Governor Nelson State Park is a 422-acre protected area along the northern shore of Lake Mendota featuring forests, prairies, and wetlands. These different landscape types provide habitat for native wildlife and create spaces for various visitor activities.

This protected area was established in 1975 by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to preserve the shoreline and natural ecosystems near Lake Mendota. The creation reflected broader efforts to protect important coastal lands within the state.

The shoreline draws people who enjoy spending time outdoors with family and friends throughout the year. Locals use this space for relaxation and recreation, making it an important gathering place for the community.

The park has several parking areas, restrooms, and picnic spots with grills spread throughout the grounds. All facilities are open daily from sunrise to sunset, making it easy to visit at your own pace.
