Washburn Observatory, Astronomical observatory in University of Wisconsin, United States
Washburn Observatory is an astronomical facility on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus that houses a 15.6-inch (40 centimeter) refracting telescope inside its white-painted brick building. The structure on Observatory Drive contains the telescope, viewing areas, and spaces for astronomical observation and research activities.
The observatory was established in 1881 and was the third largest in the United States at that time. It contributed significantly to astronomical research and development over the following decades.
The facility connects science and community through regular public viewings, where visitors can observe celestial objects using the historical telescope. These sessions allow people to experience stargazing firsthand and engage with astronomy in a direct way.
The astronomy department offers regular viewing sessions from April through October that require advance registration to participate. Visitors should plan ahead since sessions depend on weather conditions and have specific arrival times.
The original solar instruments at the facility were designed to search for the hypothetical planet Vulcan situated between the Sun and Mercury. These instruments reveal the astronomical mysteries that captivated researchers of that era.
