Hanover Street Bridge, Road bridge in Baltimore, United States
Hanover Street Bridge is a road bridge in Baltimore that spans the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River using reinforced concrete. The structure features a double-leaf bascule mechanism in its center that lifts to allow boat traffic to pass underneath.
The bridge replaced a wooden structure destroyed by fire in 1914, with construction beginning in 1916. Its completion represented a significant advance in Baltimore's transportation infrastructure at that time.
In 1993, the bridge received the official name Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge during a ceremony attended by 600 people and included helicopter flyovers.
The crossing has five traffic lanes and a separate pedestrian path, accommodating both cars and people on foot. The clearance under the span allows larger vessels to dock when the bascule section raises.
The structure received the official name Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge in 1993 during a public ceremony with hundreds of attendees. This naming honors those who served in that conflict and sees the span as a daily symbol of their memory.
