Highland Park Carousel

The Highland Park Carousel is a historic carousel featuring 34 jumping horses, one pig, one dog, and two chariots housed in a wooden 16-sided pavilion. The hand-carved wooden figures display detailed craftsmanship and ornate embellishments throughout.

Between 1920 and 1925, George F. Johnson, president of the Endicott Johnson Corporation, donated this Allan Herschell carousel as one of six gifts to Broome County. The donation reflected Johnson's commitment to providing public recreation facilities for the local community.

The carousel brings families together and serves as a gathering place for community celebrations and seasonal events. It holds meaning as a space where neighbors connect and children experience joy across generations.

The carousel sits within a sturdy wooden pavilion and can be accessed from multiple sides. Visiting is possible throughout the year, though warmer months tend to offer more comfortable conditions.

Among the 36 hand-carved wooden figures are two uncommon animals: a pig and a dog that leap alongside the horses. These rare figures reflect the creative choices of the Allan Herschell workshop in designing carousels of that era.
