Hooper Island Light, Coastal lighthouse in Dorchester County, United States.
Hooper Island Light is an iron lighthouse standing on the Chesapeake Bay with a round sparkplug design that rises about 10.5 meters above the water. The tower contains a watch room and lantern section that guide passing vessels at night.
The lighthouse was constructed in 1901 by Variety Iron Works Company after earlier supply delays affected the project. Its foundation used pneumatic techniques installed in Maryland waters.
The lighthouse maintains its position as a reference point for maritime navigation, connecting generations of sailors to Chesapeake Bay's nautical traditions.
The lighthouse is best viewed from the surrounding bay waters where the white flash appears every six seconds throughout the night. The light signal can be seen from a distance of roughly 9 nautical miles in clear conditions.
The structure was sold at auction for approximately 192,000 dollars in 2022 despite having no dock, water supply, sewage system, or electrical connection. The new owner inherited an isolated outpost sitting alone in the middle of the bay.
