The Iowa State Fairgrounds spans 435 acres, with 275 acres dedicated to fair activities and 160 acres serving as campgrounds for visitors.
Established in 1886 on the former Calvin Thornton Farmstead, the fairgrounds received National Register of Historic Places designation in 1987.
The Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center hosts year-round events including trade shows, livestock exhibitions, concerts, and agricultural demonstrations.
The fairgrounds provide comprehensive facilities including the Bruce L. Rastetter 4-H Building, Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center, and food service areas.
Heritage Village within the grounds maintains original structures from the 1850s, including an authentic country school and general store.
