Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens, Asian gardens at downtown Des Moines, United States.

Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens spread across 1.7 acres along the Des Moines River, featuring winding pathways that connect stone pagodas, lanterns, and rock formations throughout the space. The site blends natural water features and plantings with traditional Asian design elements.

Governor Robert D. Ray established the gardens in the 1980s to honor Asian American communities that settled in Iowa during his tenure from 1969 to 1983. The project marked a significant effort to recognize these populations in the region.

Six granite boulders in the Diversity Circle display Chinese characters representing values like responsibility, fairness, and respect. These stones create a gathering space where visitors pause to reflect on shared principles.

The gardens are accessible daily and located near downtown with good pedestrian connections to nearby attractions. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since pathways traverse varying terrain and ground conditions.

A 37-foot-tall Chinese pavilion stands atop a bridge where waterfalls cascade into the Des Moines River, creating a striking focal point. This structure serves as a central landmark and offers expansive views across the entire site.
