Scottish Rite Consistory Building
The Scottish Rite Consistory Building is a masonic temple in neoclassical style located in Des Moines, Iowa, designed by architect Roland Harrison and completed between 1926 and 1927. The structure contains an auditorium seating approximately 850 people, a banquet hall, and a salon accommodating more than 250 guests.
Construction began in 1926, one year after the design was finalized, and was completed in 1927. The Scottish Rite Masons in Des Moines moved into this building after visiting a similar Scottish Rite Cathedral in St. Louis for design inspiration and previous meetings in other locations.
The building displays symbols and emblems of the Scottish Rite Masons on its exterior and throughout its interior spaces, reflecting the traditions of this fraternal organization. These visible details convey the values and practices that have shaped the local community for generations.
The building is easily visible from the street with stone facades on its south and west sides at the corner of 6th Avenue and Park Street. It is currently used for weddings, community events, and regular meetings, with access available for visitors interested in architecture or local history.
The bronze doors on the south side of the building were cast by the same foundry that created doors for the similar Scottish Rite Cathedral in St. Louis. This demonstrates the attention to detail and craftsmanship that went into the temple's construction.
