Jesse Reno School, Historic school building in Tenleytown, Washington, D.C.
Jesse Reno School is a school building in Renaissance architectural style located in Tenleytown, Washington, D.C. The structure contains eight classrooms arranged across two levels with large windows that allow natural light to fill the interior.
Architect Snowden Ashford designed this school building in 1903 specifically for African American students living west of Rock Creek Park. The facility was built during a time when education for this community was particularly important.
The school is named after Fort Reno, a Civil War fortification around which a neighborhood gradually developed over time. The building served as a community anchor for families living in this part of the city.
The building is located at 4820 Howard Street NW and underwent major renovation in 2014. After the renovation work, it now connects to Deal Middle School and provides better accessibility and updated facilities.
After the 1950s, the building housed a Civil Defense office and even had antenna towers on its roof. The structure later became the Rose School, serving students with different educational needs.
