Kensington Gardens Apartment Complex
Kensington Gardens Apartment Complex, Residential complex in Kensington-Bailey neighborhood, Buffalo, United States.
Kensington Gardens Apartment Complex is a residential building with 280 units housed in 59 structures arranged around ten landscaped courtyards. The development includes one, two, and three-bedroom apartments designed for practical living.
Built between 1941 and 1942 as a Federal Housing Administration project, this complex provided worker housing during World War II. The Colonial Revival style structure was designed to quickly deliver affordable homes for many families.
The complex represents a shift in urban residential design, moving away from single-family homes toward community-focused living with shared outdoor spaces. This layout encouraged residents to interact through the arrangement of common areas.
The complex sits within walking distance of neighborhood amenities and public transportation for easy movement. Visitors should explore the many courtyards, as these form the backbone of the layout and offer pleasant routes through the grounds.
The architects Godfrey Weinstein and William Hohasuer designed three distinct building types within the complex to optimize light and ventilation. This thoughtful differentiation allowed various housing types to function seamlessly side by side.
