Liberty Building, building in Des Moines, Iowa, USA
The Liberty Building is a twelve-story commercial structure in downtown Des Moines designed in the Chicago School style, featuring tall windows and a steel framework that allowed for its height. Today it contains a Hyatt Place hotel, a fitness center, retail shops, office spaces, and luxury condominiums while maintaining its historic exterior and interior details.
The building was designed in 1924 by architects Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson and originally housed the Bankers Life insurance company, which later became Principal Financial. After the company relocated in 1940, the space served other tenants until a major renovation in 2008 transformed it into a mixed-use building.
The building served as a hub for business and communication from its opening, housing insurance offices and a local radio station that connected the city. These functions reflected its role as a center of commerce and information for Des Moines residents.
The building is located at the corner of 6th Avenue and Grand Avenue in the heart of downtown, making it easily accessible on foot with shops and services nearby. The downtown Skywalk system connects the building to other parts of the city, allowing visitors to explore comfortably without going outside.
The building features exceptionally large operable windows in the residential units, measuring about 7 feet (2 meters) tall and 5 feet (1.5 meters) wide, inspired by European room designs. These windows flood the spaces with light and offer sweeping views of downtown, setting it apart from typical renovations.
