Love Point Light, Screw-pile lighthouse in Queen Anne's County, Maryland.
Love Point Light is a screw-pile lighthouse made of cast iron and wood located at the northern tip of Kent Island in Chesapeake Bay. The structure stands about 50 feet tall and sits in the water where it once served as a vital navigation marker for passing vessels.
The lighthouse began operations in 1872 as a navigation aid for Chesapeake Bay traffic. Over the decades it served its purpose until changes in maritime technology eventually made it obsolete as an active station.
The lighthouse represents a period when such structures guided ships through Chesapeake Bay and became part of the region's maritime identity and coastal heritage.
The structure is visible from the water and certain waterfront spots but is not open to visitors. The best way to see it is from a boat or a nearby public viewing area on or near Kent Island.
During its first winter the structure faced severe ice formation that threatened its stability but it survived intact. This resilience demonstrated that the screw-pile design was well-suited for the harsh conditions of the bay.
