Lucian Newhall House
Lucian Newhall House, Historic residence in Lynn, Massachusetts.
The Lucian Newhall House is a 19th-century residential building at the corner of Nahant and Ocean Streets in Lynn. It features a distinctive mansard roof with a central square cupola, wooden block quoining at the corners, and three bays on each facade, with both street-facing sides designed identically.
The building was constructed in 1866 for a local shoe factory owner and reflects the architectural style popular among wealthy business owners in Massachusetts during that period. It earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and became part of the Diamond Historic District in 1996.
The house displays design choices from the 19th century that reveal the wealth and taste of successful factory owners from that era. The symmetrical facades and careful details speak to a time when such buildings publicly demonstrated their owners' social standing.
The house sits at a street corner and is visible from both sides, making it easy to view and photograph from the street. The location is in an established residential neighborhood that can be explored on foot.
The mansard roof features a distinctive flared profile topped on all four sides by a square cupola with round-arch windows. This combination demonstrates advanced architectural development that was relatively uncommon in Lynn during that era.
