Mile-Long Bridge, Interstate 294 bridge in northeastern Illinois, United States
The Mile-Long Bridge is an Interstate 294 bridge in northeastern Illinois that spans across the Des Plaines River valley. The structure is supported by 51 concrete piers that elevate the roadway above multiple transportation corridors below.
The original structure opened in 1958 and served as a key connection for decades. It underwent a complete rebuild from 2019 to 2022, with separate northbound and southbound spans replacing the aging infrastructure.
This bridge serves as a vital link in the Illinois Tollway system, connecting suburban areas to downtown Chicago. It crosses waterways and railroad corridors that shape the region's geography.
The bridge carries heavy traffic around the clock and provides four lanes in each direction for continuous flow. Crossing is possible at any time of day, though congestion occurs during peak hours.
Despite its name, the bridge spans 4,608 feet (1,404 m), falling short of a full mile by about 900 feet (274 m). The name reflects the impressive length even though it never quite reaches that mythical mark.
