Pahaquarry Copper Mine, Copper mine in Hardwick Township, US
Pahaquarry Copper Mine is located on the west side of Kittatinny Mountain and contains several mining tunnels, shafts, and remnants of processing facilities. The site preserves the physical structures that remain from past extraction attempts at this location.
The first documented mining operation began in 1740 under John Reading Jr's funding, though the site never achieved profitable copper production. Despite repeated attempts across generations, the mining venture remained economically unsuccessful.
The mining site is part of the Old Mine Road Historic District, protected since 1980 and preserving the area's industrial heritage for visitors to explore.
The mine ruins are accessible through hiking trails within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, managed by the National Park Service. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and bring water for the hiking experience.
From 1925 to 1972, the former mining property served as a campground for the George Washington Council of the Boy Scouts of America. This chapter in its history connects outdoor recreation with industrial ruins.
