Sunfish Pond, Glacial lake in Worthington State Forest, New Jersey.
The 44-acre lake sits at 1,600 feet elevation on Kittatinny Ridge, surrounded by a 258-acre hardwood forest with mountain laurel stands.
Created during the last ice age by the Wisconsin Glacier, Sunfish Pond became a National Natural Landmark in January 1970 after preservation efforts.
The land was preserved in 1966 through community action, including a protest hike led by Casey Kays with 655 participants against reservoir development plans.
Visitors reach the lake through multiple connecting paths including the Appalachian Trail, with the shortest route being the 1.2-mile Garvey Springs Trail.
The lake represents the southernmost glacial tarn along the Appalachian Trail, featuring collections of rock formations along its northwestern shore.
