Portland–Columbia Pedestrian Bridge, Pedestrian bridge between Portland, Pennsylvania and Columbia, New Jersey, United States.
The Portland-Columbia Pedestrian Bridge connects Portland, Pennsylvania with Columbia, New Jersey across the Delaware River. It is a narrow crossing designed only for foot traffic, equipped with sturdy railings and modern lighting for safe passage at any time of day.
The structure was originally built in 1869 as a wooden covered toll bridge. After major flood damage in 1955, it was reconstructed in 1958 with a modern steel design that remains in place today.
The bridge connects two states through a pedestrian pathway, enabling residents from Pennsylvania and New Jersey to maintain social connections across the Delaware River.
Access is available from both sides, with New Jersey providing an accessible ramp system for mobility devices. Lighting makes crossing safe even in poor weather or during darker seasons.
Before its destruction in 1955, this held the distinction of being the longest covered bridge crossing the Delaware River. This fact highlights how significant such connections were for the region at that time.
