Outhouse, Underground music venue in Lawrence, United States
The Outhouse was a music venue housed in a concrete building with cinder block walls and concrete floors, located four miles east of Lawrence on 15th Street. The space had a basic setup designed to accommodate bands and audiences in a raw, unpolished setting.
The venue began in 1985 when local musicians from The Micronotz built a stage in an abandoned schoolhouse to create performance space. It operated until 1998, leaving a lasting mark on the region's music history during that era.
Green Day, Nirvana, Social Distortion, and Tool performed here, shaping the local punk rock scene and drawing audiences seeking raw, unfiltered live music. The space became known as a gathering point for fans who valued independent music culture.
The location sat about four miles outside the city, so visitors needed to plan travel time accordingly. Since it was beyond city jurisdiction, understanding how to reach the venue and any local transport options was essential for attendance.
The venue was intentionally located beyond the city limits and outside Lawrence police jurisdiction. This position allowed the space greater independence in how it operated, attracting music fans who valued that freedom.
