Penumbra Theatre Company, African American theatre company in Saint Paul, Minnesota, US
Penumbra Theatre Company is a professional Black theater in the Summit-University neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota, housed inside the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center on Selby Avenue. The company runs a dedicated performance space within the building and also maintains education and arts programs alongside its main stage productions.
Lou Bellamy founded the company in 1976 with a federal CETA grant, with the goal of building a professional home for Black theater in Minnesota. It was the first institution of its kind in the state and has remained active ever since.
Penumbra is one of the few professional theaters in the US dedicated entirely to Black playwrights and storytellers. Attending a show here means encountering voices and stories that rarely reach mainstream American stages.
Most productions run between September and May, so summer visits may coincide with a break in the main season. Checking the current schedule before going is a good idea, as programming shifts from one season to the next.
The theater takes its name from the penumbra, the partial shadow that forms during a solar or lunar eclipse. The name was chosen deliberately to evoke a space between light and darkness where new perspectives can emerge.
