SteppingStone Theatre for Youth Development

SteppingStone Theatre for Youth Development is a youth theatre in downtown Saint Paul that produces performances and runs educational programs. The facility occupies a renovated building with a 430-seat theatre, modern lighting and sound systems, plus dedicated workshop and rehearsal spaces.

The theatre was founded in 1987 to bring theatrical arts to students in Saint Paul's inner-city neighborhoods. It grew from two initial artist-in-residence programs in schools into an established cultural organization with its own venue.

The name reflects the idea that theatrical experiences serve as stepping stones in young people's lives. Performances tell stories that resonate with children and families, while workshops let youth discover their own creative voices on stage.

The theatre operates on a Pay-What-You-Are-Able system that removes financial barriers for many families interested in attending. Classes, summer camps, and performances run throughout the year on a regular schedule.

The organization relocated to Park Square Theatre in 2019, significantly expanding its capacity and resources. This partnership allowed it to share facilities with an established theatre while offering youth access to larger performance spaces and more technical capabilities.
