Justus Ramsey Stone House
Justus Ramsey Stone House, Stone residence from 1855 in Saint Paul, US.
The Justus Ramsey Stone House is a two-story structure on West 7th Street built from light gray quarry-faced limestone assembled with ashlar-coursed methods and lime mortar. The stone walls demonstrate 19th century construction craftsmanship.
Justus Cornelius Ramsey built this structure, which stands as the oldest surviving residence in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Its construction in 1855 marks an early chapter in the city's residential development.
From 1890 to 1933, this residence sheltered many African American families, including formerly enslaved people and railroad workers. These communities shaped the home's story and made it significant to the city's African American heritage.
The exterior is viewable from the street, though the interior remains closed to visitors. Walking past on West 7th Street offers a good view of the stone facade.
The north wall collapsed in 2022, prompting major preservation efforts. Conservators are now developing plans to relocate the structure to a new location within Saint Paul.
