James J. Hill Reference Library
James J. Hill Reference Library, Reference library in Saint Paul, US
The James J. Hill Reference Library is a research library housed in a Renaissance-style building on West Fourth Street, featuring high ceilings and classical architectural details. Inside are research materials, computer stations, conference rooms, and study areas spread across multiple floors.
The library was founded in the early 1920s by railroad magnate James J. Hill and designed by architect Electus D. Litchfield following Renaissance principles. It closed in 2019 due to operating costs, and was acquired by First & First in 2021 for conversion into an event venue.
The collections focus on business research and economic development, drawing in both academic researchers and entrepreneurs who work within its walls. The layout and furnishings support serious study and professional exchange.
The building sits centrally downtown and is easily walkable from the Capitol area. Keep in mind that it now functions as an event venue, so public access may vary depending on scheduled activities.
The complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and preserves an example of early 1900s Renaissance architecture. The transformation into an event center has kept the historic structure intact while opening it to new audiences.
