James J. Hill Reference Library, Reference library in Saint Paul, US

The James J. Hill Reference Library stands within a Renaissance building at 80 West Fourth Street, featuring high ceilings and classical architectural elements.

Railroad magnate James J. Hill established this library in the early 1920s, and architect Electus D. Litchfield designed the structure following Renaissance principles.

The library building houses collections focused on business research and economic development, serving both academic researchers and professional entrepreneurs.

Visitors can access research materials, computer stations, conference rooms, and study areas within this National Register of Historic Places structure.

The building transformed into an event center in 2021 after First & First acquired it, following the library's closure due to operating costs in 2019.
