St. Paul Public Library, Public library in Saint Paul, United States
St. Paul Public Library is the public library system of Saint Paul, Minnesota, made up of a central library downtown and a network of branch locations spread across the city's neighborhoods. A bookmobile also operates to reach residents who live farther from a fixed location.
The system traces back to 1856, when the YMCA opened a reading room in Saint Paul for public use. Several associations later merged in 1863 to create the Saint Paul Library Association, which laid the foundation for what the library has become today.
The library's branches each reflect the neighborhood around them, and many offer programs in languages other than English to match the communities they serve. Visitors often find people of all ages using the space not just for books, but for everyday needs like printing, job searching, or meeting neighbors.
The central library sits in downtown Saint Paul and is easy to reach on foot or by public transit from most parts of the city. Cardholders can also access a range of digital tools from home, including language learning and career support resources.
When the library dropped late fees in 2019, thousands of overdue items were returned by people who had stayed away rather than face the charges. Many of those former borrowers then started using the library again on a regular basis.
