Vision of Peace, Memorial sculpture in Saint Paul City Hall, Minnesota, United States.
Vision of Peace is a sculpture made of creamy white Mexican onyx inside Saint Paul City Hall, depicting five Native Americans seated around a fire. The work stands 38 feet (12 meters) tall, weighs 60 tons, and consists of approximately 98 sections mounted on steel beams in the memorial concourse lobby.
Swedish sculptor Carl Milles created this monument in 1936 to honor 340 Minnesota soldiers who died in World War I. Additional names of the fallen were inscribed into the structure through 1988.
The sculpture displays Native American ceremonial elements that Milles observed during visits to Oklahoma communities. The sacred pipes held by the figures represent connection and communication in this cultural tradition.
The sculpture is located in the memorial lobby near the Fourth Street entrance of City Hall and is easy to access. Visitors should allow time to walk around the structure and view it from multiple angles.
The entire structure rotates 66 degrees left and right on its base throughout the day. This slow movement reveals different perspectives of the intricate assembly as it turns.
