Alexander Ramsey House

The Alexander Ramsey House is a Second Empire mansion with spacious rooms across multiple levels. The interior displays marble fireplaces, hand-carved walnut details, and a large collection of furniture and objects from the 1800s.

Built between 1868 and 1872, it served as the residence of Alexander Ramsey, Minnesota's first territorial governor. Its construction coincided with Ramsey's influential role in shaping the young territory's political development.

The house reveals how wealthy families lived in the late 1800s, with rooms designed for different social and domestic activities. Visitors today see personal items and furnishings that reflect the daily rhythm and values of that era.

The house contains a substantial collection of Renaissance-Revival furniture personally selected by Anna Ramsey from a prominent New York department store. These pieces offer a rare window into the taste and means of wealthy families on the frontier.
