Irvine Park Historic District, Historic district in Saint Paul, US.
Irvine Park Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Saint Paul, Minnesota, built around a small central square with a public fountain and a gazebo. The streets around the square are lined with houses from the 19th century, built in styles such as Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Carpenter Gothic.
The neighborhood was founded in 1849 when two men laid out a public square modeled after the village greens of New England. That layout shaped how Saint Paul grew outward from this corner and is still visible in the streets today.
The square was named after one of its founders and became a gathering place for the community. Visitors can observe how different house styles reflect the wealth and tastes of families who lived here during different decades of the 1800s.
The district is easy to walk through, and a loop around the central square gives a good overview of the different house types in the area. Anyone planning an event on the grounds should know that a permit is required and must be arranged in advance.
The oldest building in the district, a house from 1852, was moved to different locations more than once over the years. This practice of relocating wooden houses on rollers or rails was common in the 19th-century Midwest, where timber frames were easier to shift than brick construction.
