Primitive Baptist Church of Brookfield
Primitive Baptist Church of Brookfield, Baptist church in Slate Hill, United States
Primitive Baptist Church of Brookfield is a white two-story wooden church with a four-story tower topped by a bell chamber, spire, and classically detailed front entrance with sidelights facing east. The building sits along US 6 near Slate Hill and continues to serve the community through regular services and gatherings.
Built in 1792 when the settlement carried the name Brookfield, this building ranks among the oldest church structures in Orange County. The congregation faced hardship in later decades and the building fell dormant for many years before being restored to active use.
The interior shows how worshippers once gathered with original box pews that offered privacy, a raised hexagonal pulpit for the preacher, and a three-sided gallery for additional seating. These features reveal the social structure and religious practices of the early congregation.
The building sits along US 6 near Slate Hill and is easily accessible from this main road through the area. Regular services and events take place throughout the year, so visiting during these times lets you experience the space as it was meant to be used.
The church sat without a regular congregation for roughly 70 years until a pastor from North Carolina breathed new life into the community. This revival demonstrates how a nearly abandoned building can find a second purpose through dedicated effort.
