Historic Track, Horse racing venue in Goshen, New York, US.
Historic Track is a harness racing venue in Goshen, New York, featuring a traditional oval course, wooden grandstands, and adjoining paddocks. The facility has kept much of its original layout and structure, making it a rare surviving example of 19th-century horse racing infrastructure.
The venue was founded in 1838, making it the oldest continuously operating horse racing track in the United States. It has survived nearly two centuries without ever closing, which sets it apart from most other tracks of that era.
The wooden grandstands and oval course give the place a feel that has changed little over the generations, making it easy to understand why local families return year after year. Harness racing knowledge and customs are passed down through communities that have followed the sport here for a long time.
Racing events generally take place from June through September, so planning a visit during those months gives you the best chance of seeing the track in use. Arriving early on race days helps you find a good spot in the grandstands and gives you time to walk around the grounds before the action starts.
This is the only harness racing track in the United States to have been named a National Historic Landmark, a status more commonly given to battlefields or government buildings. That designation puts a working sports venue in the same category as some of the country's most recognized historical sites.
