Presentation Academy, school in Kentucky, United States of America
Presentation Academy is a school for young women in Louisville, Kentucky, housed in a substantial brick building designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style with a distinctive tower and thick stone walls. The main structure was completed in 1893 and the campus now combines historic structures with modern additions including the Arts and Athletic Center, which opened in 2009 and features a gymnasium seating 700 people and a theater.
The school was founded in 1831 by Mother Catherine Spalding and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth as the second school established in Louisville. The current building was designed in 1893 by architect D. X. Murphy in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, and though a fire damaged the tower in 1977, it was reconstructed to match its original appearance.
The school's name reflects the mission of the Sisters of Charity who founded it and dedicated themselves to teaching and service. Today the campus remains a gathering place where students participate in traditions like the annual Walk-A-Thon, a three-mile walk through downtown Louisville that raises money for classmates and builds school spirit.
The school is located near downtown Louisville, and students can walk to nearby places like the city library and riverfront in short trips. Visitors should know the campus features both historic buildings and modern structures, so allow time to see both architectural styles when exploring.
Students write their names on the walls of the school tower, a custom that documents the school's story across generations. This tradition connects current and former students and creates a lasting record of their time at the school.
