Providence Place, Shopping center in Providence, Rhode Island, United States.
Providence Place covers over 1.4 million square feet (130,000 square meters) of leasable space across three stories, housing more than 165 stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues in downtown Providence.
The shopping center opened on August 20, 1999, after a $500 million public and private investment aimed at revitalizing downtown Providence and replacing retail activity that had moved to suburban areas.
The mall features a four-story Wintergarden with glass walls designed by Friedrich St. Florian, serving as a central gathering space for community events, local artist collaborations, and social interactions beyond traditional shopping.
Visitors can access Providence Place by car, with most shoppers driving to the facility, or by using public transportation such as buses that connect to nearby Amtrak's Providence Station and downtown areas.
The site was previously occupied by the Rhode Island State Prison from 1838 to 1877, where the last legal execution in Rhode Island took place in 1845, before becoming a teacher-training institute and later a parking lot.
