RIT Observatory

RIT Observatory is an astronomical facility on the Rochester Institute of Technology campus consisting of three separate buildings designed for different observation purposes. The complex features a roll-off roof structure housing a 14-inch telescope and a 5-meter dome equipped with computer-controlled telescopes for research and viewing.

The observatory was established and expanded after Rochester Institute of Technology relocated to its current Henrietta location in 1961. The facility was modernized with computer-controlled telescopes to support advanced research and educational programs for the university.

The facility hosts public viewing nights and educational programs where visitors and students can observe the night sky together. These events connect people with astronomy and foster interest in space exploration through hands-on experience.

The facility is located on the southeastern section of the RIT campus along John Street, making it easy to find once on campus grounds. Plan your visit during announced public viewing nights, as these opportunities occur only on specific dates throughout the year.

The surrounding trees limit views of the night sky in certain directions but paradoxically provide natural protection from light pollution caused by nearby street lights. This setting creates pockets of darker sky that benefit telescope observations despite the suburban location.
