Arvine Heights Historic District
Arvine Heights Historic District, Historic residential district in Rochester, United States.
Arvine Heights is a historic residential district in Rochester containing 61 buildings, with 37 homes situated on about 4.4 acres (1.8 hectares). The structures represent a mix of architectural styles arranged throughout this section of the Nineteenth Ward.
The neighborhood developed between 1920 and 1942 under the direction of Homer J. French during Rochester's post-World War I growth period. This construction phase captures how the city expanded into new residential areas after the war.
The architecture displays Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and American Craftsman styles that reflect how middle-class families of the early 20th century wanted to live. Walking through the streets, you see how these design choices shaped the neighborhood's character and appeal.
The district can be explored on foot without any entry fees, with views of the homes available from public streets throughout the area. The best way to see the architecture is to walk slowly through the neighborhood and observe the details of each building.
The district preserves an nearly intact collection of homes from the 1920s and 1930s, a rare example of middle-class residential development that survived without major changes. This completeness makes it one of the clearest windows into how families lived during that period.
